The Denver Broncos continue to look for their next coach and, and it hasn’t been easy. Per an ESPN report, owner Greg Penner flew to Ann Arbor to meet with Jim Harbaugh, though it “didn’t result in a deal.”

TheWolverine.com received tips last week that the Broncos’ pursuit of Harbaugh might not be over after they failed to reach a deal with any of their other candidates. Our Clayton Sayfie, in fact, tracked a plane heading into nearby Willow Run from Denver … indeed, it appears it belonged to the Broncos.

Harbaugh flirted with the Minnesota Vikings last offseason and admitted he was ready to return to the NFL with the team if all went right in the interview and both sides were all in. They weren’t, though most believe Harbaugh went to Minneapolis to sign a contract.

The Broncos had been pursuing former New Orleans coach Sean Payton, former Stanford coach David Shaw, and several others, but haven’t been able to sign anyone.

Per the ESPN report, “Penner did his due diligence and still traveled to Ann Arbor to meet with the coach in person, like he’s done with seven other candidates during the Broncos’ head-coaching search.”

Michigan president Santa Ono reported via twitter two weeks ago Harbaugh had informed him he was staying. Harbaugh also released a statement.

“I love the relationships that I have at Michigan — coaches, staff, families, administration, president Santa Ono, and especially the players and their families,” Harbaugh said in his statement on Jan. 16. “My heart is at the University of Michigan. I once heard a wise man say, ‘Don’t try to out-happy, happy.’ Go Blue!”

Is this the end of his flirtation with the NFL? From ESPN:

‘While some have pointed to the fact that his dalliances with the NFL could go on, one league source predicted this week that the league will move on and Harbaugh is not likely to have many NFL options in the future.”

Sources involved told TheWolverine.com Harbaugh will have a contract to sign when the NCAA investigation into improper contact, etc., is settled. Both sides seem to be unwilling to budge, however, with Michigan supporting Harbaugh, who refused to say he lied to NCAA investigators about meeting with committed recruits during a COVID dead period when they stopped by for an impromptu visit.
