Michigan’s season ended with a 78-65 loss to Auburn in which the Tigers pulled away in the last 10 minutes. Head coach Dusty May said he was already working on putting next year’s roster together, noting they were in “competitive” position, and some of this year’s players made their intentions known.

Two — redshirt junior forward Will Tschetter and junior guard Roddy Gayle Jr. — said they’d already made up their minds to return.

“Absolutely, I plan on coming back,” Gayle said after notching 7 points in 25 minutes. “Me, personally, I’m more levelheaded than any of these guys. I feel like I look at things from a different standpoint. Yes, it sucks that we lost. Nobody wants to have this feeling in the Sweet 16, but to accomplish everything we have this season coming from different places, coach [May] being a first-year guy, then being able to accomplish the things we have this year, I’m’ proud o the way our guys fought and came together throughout his year.

“It was very hard. I feel like each and every person had to battle through adversity throughout the season. We just kind of stuck together … we were right where we wanted to be, but Auburn had more experience, more veteran guys, and they were able to close out the game.”

Like Gayle, Tschetter, too, confirmed he’d be back for May’s second year. He had two points in 11 minutes but provided a spark in several games this year.

“I don’t know anywhere else. Ann Arbor is my home,” he said. “Coach May and I have a great relationship …  the whole coaching staff. Guys that are around us coming back have a great relationship. Why would I go anywhere else?”

They both feel they can make another run next year if they get the pieces around them. May said junior Danny Wolf “would have some tough decisions to make,” though last week he made it sound as though he was going pro … he also said U-M was “competitive” when it came to NIL and forming a roster.

“I feel like we set a foundation for Dusty May’s campaign at Michigan, and hopefully in the years to come we will be in this place many more times,” Gayle said.
