Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore isn’t wasting any time rounding out his offensive coaching staff. After naming Kirk Campbell offensive coordinator and moving Grant Newsome from tight ends coach to offensive line, Moore is expected to go with Steve Casula to replace Newsome at tight ends coach per a source with knowledge of the situation.

Casula worked at Michigan as an offensive analyst in 2019 and was promoted to senior offensive analyst in 2020. He worked closely with then-offensive coordinator Josh Gattis and helped lead the Wolverines to the 2021 Big Ten title before moving on to UMass with former U-M defensive coordinator Don Brown.

Casula, a Delaware graduate, was the UMass offensive coordinator the last two years. Many former Michigan coaches have lauded him for his offensive mind, including Brown.

“I worked with Steve in Ann Arbor, and our thoughts are compatible when it comes to his offensive philosophy and the way he moves the football,” Brown said in a statement after hiring him. “Steve was a chief architect of Ferris State’s run to the National Championship in 2018, and I am so excited to welcome Steve, his wife Stephanie, and his entire family to Amherst.”

“Tremendous hire for @UMassFootball,” Gattis said on Twitter at the time. “One of the most creative offensive minds in football! Not just a great coach but a even better person! I’m excited to watch him back running the show! Thank you for all of your sacrifice & dedication to make Michigan football better! #MyBrother.”

Moore tweeted he expected Casula to “light it up.” Now, he’ll get the chance to provide input to his staff while coaching tight ends, as well.

Casula, a University of Delaware graduate, was a graduate assistant at Western Michigan, where he earned a Masters degree, before coaching tight ends at Colgate. He was offensive coordinator at Davenport in Grand Rapids, Mich., and Ferris State before joining the Michigan staff.

Former head coach Jim Harbaugh said, “I love him — I love what he brings” upon hiring him in 2021.
