Jim Harbaugh and the Michigan football coaches are fighting on the recruiting trail to land more 2023 talent, but it hasn’t been easy. The Wolverines are struggling to gain momentum, even after a Big Ten title season, but have made progress with several targets.

Defensive lineman Enow Etta and others are getting closer to decisions. We talk about that and more in today’s chat.

Michigan is going to be “transformational, not transactional” in its recruiting efforts, Harbaugh has said. Regent Jordan Acker and others have talked about what that means.

“Most importantly is that all of this is evening the playing field between schools like Michigan that are not willing to bend the rules and schools that are,” Acker said of U-M’s NIL. “Michigan is an incredibly well-resourced school. Our brand is incredibly powerful. Four of the top five college football games this year involved us.”

But will that be the case if they’re not winning at a high level? Probably not. Recruiting remains the lifeblood of any program, including Michigan’s.

Discussing Michigan basketball

Michigan basketball coach Juwan Howard went overseas for his latest pickup, Lebanon’s Youssef Khayat. Khayat is an outstanding wing who averaged 17.5 points per game last year in Limoges, France, but he has yet to face top-notch competition.

That will change soon. He plans to be here for the 2022 season and will play for his home country this summer. He’s still working on a visa that will allow him to travel to the United States for school at Michigan. That’s not expected to be a hold-up.

Elite shooting guard Marvel Allen, meanwhile, is becoming a very real option in the 2023 class. Allen is a former LSU commitment who likes the Wolverines a lot, and he is talking about visiting with 2023 point guard Isaiah Collier.

Collier and Allen are friends who have played together. It’s feasible they could attend the same school, possibly Michigan.

We talk about that and more, too, in today’s chat.
