RELATED: Michigan DT Mazi Smith is ready for an expanded role in 2022
Jim Harbaugh and the Michigan football coaches are fighting on the recruiting trail to land more 2023 talent, with recent success. There’s a new President in town in Santa J. Ono, and he’s very pro-athletics — what will that mean for U-M’s recruiting approach going forward?
“It knits the whole community together,” Ono said Wednesday of Michigan athletics. “There’s tremendous synergy between academics and athletics, and I want to do everything I can to make sure Michigan competes at the highest level.”
He stressed “highest.” In other words, he wants to continue to compete for national championships, as Michigan has been in a number of sports.
Among the other topics on the football side, sophomore linebacker Junior Colson has been posting photos of his hand (or wrist) in a cast. Other Wolverines have said they’ve been healing from their injuries … we talk about the impact and what’s going on at certain positions.
In addition, more talk about Olu Oluwatimi and how the Virginia center fared this spring. Senior defensive tackle Mazi Smith went head-to-head with him a number of times, of course, and came away impressed.

Discussing Michigan basketball
Michigan basketball coach Juwan Howard and his team are headed overseas next month and will play several scrimmages to get the team ready for the 2022-23 season. The Wolverines will replace four starters, but there are several options to replace them.
One, Lebanese standout Youssef Khayat, is still working on obtaining a visa. He likely won’t play with the team in Greece, but he’s looking forward to joining the team and taking classes this fall. Terrance Williams and Isaiah Barnes are making waves in the offseason, and we talk about some of the freshmen and their expected early impact.
Jett Howard, Dug McDaniel, Tarris Reed and others are hoping to see the floor in year one. Will they?
All those topics and more in today’s Michigan athletics chat.
