Today, we talk more Michigan football. We’re picking up tidbits while prepping for our annual The Wolverine Football Preview, and we talk about those … visit us in chat, here: TheWolverine.com CHAT.

The defense had another outstanding spring campaign and appears to be better than last year’s … potentially.

“I just really like where we’re at,” defensive coordinator Jesse Minter said on the In the Trenches podcast with Jon Jansen. “Last year, the talk was like second year of the same system, which was really good familiarity for the players. Now, my own second year, I think the comfort level between us is really, really high. I think we understand each other’s expectations, each other’s personalities, each other’s goals and what we’re trying to get accomplished. I’m really, really pleased with the spring overall.”

Everyone is at a different level in spring ball, he noted. Some guys are perfecting, while others are still learning.

Kris Jenkins, Mikey [Sainristil], it’s for them to really tailor things in their game really specific, small improvements that they might be trying to make,” Minter said. “And then for the first, second, third-year guys that might not have cracked the two deep yet, it’s it’s a major opportunity to make a jump. So, it’s a good mix of all that … and I’m pleased with just about everybody’s performance overall and excited now to go into that next phase and get them with Coach Herb [strength coach Ben Herbert] and let him do his thing with them.”

Then be excited to get them back late summer.

It was less about scheme than technique, etc. this spring, Minter said. Now, though, they’ll work on adding to the arsenal.

“Schematically, I think anytime you have some success, I think people are always chasing … people are always studying you,” the Michigan D.C. said. “So it’s imperative that we continue to add, continue to tweak, continue to find a better way to do certain things. That’s an ongoing, always process. I’m just excited to see where we’re at heading into this year.”
