Jim Harbaugh and his Michigan football team started fall camp August 3 (Wednesday), and there were plenty of storylines. The biggest, of course, is Cade McNamara vs. J.J. McCarthy at quarterback. The two continue to battle for the starting job, and while McNamara believes it’s “my team,” McCarthy will have a say.

But it’s clear Michigan is loaded in talent on both sides of the ball. The running back situation is an interesting one. Color commentator and former Michigan All-American Jon Jansen said recently he expected running back Donovan Edwards to be one of the best backs in the country. Junior Blake Corum, however, averaged 6.7 yards per carry last year.

Jansen loves Corum. At the same time, he said, he believes Edwards is “that special.” We’ve seen him catch the ball out of the backfield, but can he run between the tackles?

He showed great ability this spring. He’ll have this fall to add to his arsenal.

On defense, Harbaugh said he has a “sneaking suspicion” the Michigan defense could be better than last year’s. That was an eye-opening comment, but not all that surprising given how much talent is on that side of the ball.

If the Wolverines get some pass rush, this defense could be outstanding again under first-year Michigan coordinator Jesse Minter.

Discussing Michigan hockey and Mel Pearson

What’s going on with Michigan hockey coach Mel Pearson? It appears there’s a split between the administration and athletic department on how to handle his potential extension. A WilmerHale report that highlighted issues within the program included alleged lying to investigators and more.

In short, most believe Pearson is living on borrowed time. However, it appears he has Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel’s support, and that obviously helps him … somewhat.

At the end of the day, this is going to be the administration’s call. And they seem to have made it pretty clear how they’re leaning.

On the Michigan basketball front, head coach Juwan Howard is waiting on some recruits to make decisions. He’s also about to take his team abroad, where incoming frosh Youssef Khayat will join them.

The Wolverines will play exhibition games in Greece and France in what should only help them heading into the season. They have four starters to replace, but Michigan also has big man Hunter Dickinson back for his junior season.

We also discuss the schedule, recruiting and more in today’s chat.
