Michigan football camp is in full force, and several players are standing out. A number of position battles are still too close to call, but they’re starting to come into focus, head coach Jim Harbaugh said Tuesday. Many of them will play out into the season, and some possibly into Big Ten play.
One that won’t — defensive tackle. Senior Kris Jenkins and Mason Graham are killing it, and the three guys behind them — Rayshaun Benny, Kenneth Grant, and Cam Goode — are all more than capable and rising. Even the true freshmen are impressing, Graham said Wednesday. The future is bright at the position, and Graham thanked guys like Mazi Smith (now with the Dallas Cowboys) and Jenkins for bringing him along.
“There’s a lot to learn from those two guys, two of the top guys at what they do,” Graham said. “They are great competitors, guys on this defense who do a lot the little things right. I think that’s what sets them apart from everyone else. Kris is doing a great job just in the run game, pass game, developing as a better player overall.”
Graham and Jenkins have become tighter over the last year, which only helps them and the Michigan defense as a whole. Many of the freshmen stuck together in their first years last season, but all of the U-M linemen are on the same page. Graham and Jenkins are leading the way.
“Last year, we didn’t have as much of a connection like me and some of other guys,” the Michigan sophomore continued. “Throughout this year, we’ve connected on a deeper level. We’re doing more stuff outside field, chopping it up after practice, building that chemistry for when game time, hard times come.

“We’ve all been working on all the run game stuff still, but we’re spending more time in individuals even watching more film on seeing what the top guys doing, what moves are working. How can we produce putting pressure on the quarterback to help our back end, just help out the defense?”
The Michigan defensive line has had more meetings, too, in preparation for the season. Overall, it’s paying off. This group has the chance to be one of the best in the country, let alone the Big Ten.
