Michigan is ready to take out some frustration on the Scarlet Knights after the Michigan State assault on two of its players. Eight Spartans have been suspended (will there be more?), and the Big Ten is still waiting to see what else is out there, apparently, before it comments.

We’ll talk about that and more in today’s chat, including other topics, such as:

Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy has elevated his game

Michigan sophomore quarterback J.J. McCarthy has been more game manager than dynamic passer this year, but that’s exactly what this offense has called for. Yesterday, quarterbacks coach and co-offensive coordinator Matt Weiss said he had been “better than expected.” Head coach Jim Harbaugh also said he loved what he’d seen from his sophomore.

“I just think J.J. continues to improve game by game,” he said. “His growth — we’re very pleased with it. Whether he’s throwing from the pocket, whether he’s out of the pocket, whether he’s running the ball himself, he continues to make great decisions and plays the position very well.”

He’s starting to trust his instincts more when it comes to running the ball, as well. We’ll see if they continue to find ways to use him as a ball carrier.

Greg Schiano praises the U-M run game

Michigan running back Blake Corum is a Heisman Trophy candidate, and sophomore Donovan Edwards is starting to come into his own, as well. Both have Rutgers coach Greg Schiano’s attention.

“It’s hard. Why do they have a good running game? They have a very good offensive line,” Schiano said. “They have two really good backs, probably more, but two that play a lot, and a quarterback that can run and pass. So … you have to defend the pass and you have to defend his run.

“The offensive line is doing a good job blocking. They have got two upper echelon running backs. It’s one of the better outfits in America on offense. That’s why you look at where they are ranked in all those statistical categories that are up in the top. Have we played against people like that? Yeah, we have. We have to do a great job. We have to be at our very best to have a chance to slow them down.”

But he knows they won’t shut them down completely.

“Are you going to stop them? No,” he said. “No one’s stopped them. But we’re going to do everything we can to the best of our ability and see where that stacks up.”

We discuss that and more in today’s chat.
