Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh has hired some new analysts and has yet to announce Chris Partridge’s role. What will it be? Plus, the Wolverines are preparing for spring ball (already), which starts Feb. 20. We talk position battles, the Jim Harbaugh contract situation and much more in today’s chat, here: THEWOLVERINE.COM CHAT, FEBRUARY 9

For those who missed it yesterday, Fox Analyst Joel Klatt wasn’t impressed with the 2023 Michigan recruiting class.

“[A] surprise on the kind of negative side, if you will, was Michigan,” Fox analyst Joel Klatt said on his show recently. “Michigan landed at [18th] overall class despite two straight playoff appearances, despite two straight Big Ten titles, despite two straight wins over their rival, the Ohio State Buckeyes. That should have translated into more momentum.

“We’ve seen them have in their history under Harbaugh much better classes than this. It’s kind of strange. They were third in the Big Ten, by the way. It’s not even like they were just second in the Big Ten. They were third in the Big Ten. Penn State jumped up ahead of them.”

We discuss recruiting and yesterday’s column on the subject in chat.

Michigan basketball making a move

Michigan won its third straight game in Big Ten play, beating Nebraska 93-72 Wednesday. The Wolverines made 14 triples and were outstanding offensively, though the defense struggled at times.

Still … it was good enough.

“When you’re playing good defensively, active in getting deflections, limit your opponent to one-shot opportunities, doing your job when communicating on the defensive end as well as on drives guys stepping up — whether it’s taking charges or protecting the rim — that’s when good things are going to happen,” head coach Juwan Howard said. “When you look at what we have, 10 new guys — it takes some time to develop game by game. It doesn’t always start out early.

“This is the new landscape of college basketball. It takes time.”

Especially when your starting point guard (Jaelin Llewellyn) goes down with a season ending knee injury in the non-conference and you’re forced to play a true freshman there. Dug McDaniel has had his moments, and he scored 14 points last night, but Michigan could use one more guard.

Terrance Williams II, meanwhile, had his best scoring game in a while. He put up double digits for the first time since Jan. 1

“It’s not as cute, it’s not as sexy — everyone looks at the box score and says ‘man, he only scored five points’ and there’s like an uproar,” Howard said. “[But] this guy knows how to play, and he does a lot of things that really help our team. I’m just happy that we have a Terrance Williams.”
