Michigan dominated Minnesota, 52-10, owning the trenches on both sides of the ball. The Wolverines ran for nearly 200 yards and held the Golden Gophers’ offense in check, though the Minnesota offense did have some success on the ground early.

“They really played well,” Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh said of his team. “We had the one penalty, the holding penalty … boy, that looked like a pretty good block. So … a lot of grit. Just good. Just grateful — grateful for the way the guys go about their business, and it’s really happening during the week of practice, too.

“I know I’ve talked to you before about it, but the way they practice is incredible. These games … you just feel them getting won, and it’s half the battle to have a great Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday practice. And you’ve still got to play the game, but just the sharpness that you feel … it’s early in the week, and it gets polished. It’s a really high level to start with, and then by the end of the week you’re thinking, ‘man these guys are dialed, they’re sharp … they’re ready to go and ready to play.'”

Michigan junior quarterback J.J. McCarthy, meanwhile, was outstanding once again. He threw the ball well but is starting to show out as a runner, using his feet to beat defenders to the corner and stiff arming, to boot.

“He’s fast. He outran some angles today, and it’s good,” Harbaugh said. “Playmaker … probably his best attribute, and there are other really good ones — he’s really smart. I talked about how he’s in control of the entire offense. The protections, the mental side of the game, really accurate thrower, can make every throw to every part of the field.

“He’s super athletic. He’s a great runner, and of all those great qualities his best quality is playmaker. And it’s good.”
