The Wolverines battled it out at The Big House in the annual Michigan spring game on Saturday.

The Blue team edged the Maize by a possession, 20-12, through four 12-minute quarters. Michigan co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Sherrone Moore led the Blue while co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach Steve Clinkscale took charge of the Maize. Moore triumphantly helped the victors earn a postgame steak dinner, but Clinkscale’s group was disappointingly left with hotdogs after the losing effort.

Michigan senior quarterback Cade McNamara garnered all the attention with sophomore J.J. McCarthy out (shoulder injury), but surprisingly a redshirt freshman ended up stealing the show. Michigan walk-on Davis Warren, who hadn’t played a live football game in three years, answered the call to take snaps for the Maize and finished 12-of-23 for 175 yards. A battle with leukemia forced him to miss the 2019 season, and COVID-19 took away any thought of a senior campaign in 2020, yet the Los Angeles native still weathered the storm to make waves in 2022.

QB quotes

McNamara on teammate Davis Warren: “If there’s one dude who’s in the film room with me every single time, it’s Davis. He was with me during every game week last season. I had a prior relationship with him before he came to Michigan, but I think he’s very smart. It’s been three years, and I think he played well today. I’m proud of him. That’s my guy. I look forward to what he can do.”

On Michigan football’s growth: “We have so many players and so many guys with skill. I’m expecting us to be more dynamic. The mentality of this team is in a really good place. Over the course of spring, we’ve had some bumps and dips, but I think those have leveled out. We’ve addressed them. We’re in a really good place going into the rest of the offseason.”
