WATCH: Breaking down Michigan's RBs – Are we sleeping on Kalel Mullings?
The Michigan Wolverines head into the 2024 football season with the projected two-headed monster at running back of senior Donovan Edwards and graduate Kalel Mullings. We know U-M wants to run the ball a ton, and each will be a critical part in establishing that identity.
Edwards is projected as the top rusher on the depth chart heading into the season, but is a legitimate timeshare with Mullings in the cards? It’s within the realm of possibilities that the fifth-year player has his best football ahead of him, and an NFL future.
TheWolverine.com’s Anthony Broome and Clayton Sayfie ran through each scholarship running back on the roster, starting with its most experienced player in Mullings:
“I think it’s really interesting because I agree that Donovan Edwards is the projected starter and then Kalel Mullings is the backup change of pace, short-yardage, situational type of guy who’s going to play a lot still, but there’s a scenario that exists that Mullings is Michigan’s starter,” Sayfie said. “Or at least the guy that gets the majority of the carries this coming season. I don’t think I would predict that right now, but that possibility is open right now. He’s got a big year ahead of him. I think he could be an NFL running back at some point. He needs a big year in his final season at Michigan to do that, but he’s somebody that I’m excited to watch more of.

“There’s still a lot out there I think for Kalel Mullings to show he is a big back and a power back. As Jim Harbaugh said, e was like an arrow through snow is what it’s like what it’s like to watch Kalel Mullings run. He said that he could redefine what a big back looks like. And Harbaugh said, nobody likes a big back like I do. Well, Sherrone Moore is very similar in the way he wants to run his offense. They want a physical runner in there, somebody who can get it done between the tackles, somebody who can get it done in short yardage, and I think Kalel Mullings can be that.”
