INDIANAPOLIS – The Michigan Wolverines are headed to the Big Ten Tournament Championship Game against the Wisconsin Badgers on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. after an 81-80 win over the Maryland Terrapins on Saturday.

There were a number of swings throughout the night and Michigan led by as many as 15 points in the contest, but it came down to a coast-to-coast layup from point guard Tre Donaldson just before the final buzzer to get the job done.

“As a fan of the sport, what a great game for college basketball and a great game for our league,” head coach Dusty May said in his podium session after the game. “We have a lot of respect for the Maryland program. Personally I’ll be shocked if they’re not playing in at least the second weekend. That’s how talented they are.

“Credit to our guys. We weathered some storms, made some good runs, but made enough plays that we needed to at the end.”

Donaldson explained the playcall in the huddle and the decision to get downhill to give Michigan the victory.

“The play was either to make a play for myself or make it for my teammates,” Donaldson said. “When I got down there, they took away my teammates, so it was just about me making a play for the team but for me as well.”

Michigan now finds itself a win away from adding a trophy to its facility, which is something that the guys in the building knew they were capable of despite losing out on a regular-season Big Ten Championship.

“We have a lot of guys who are coming from winning programs,” big man Danny Wolf said after the game. “I know Tre won the SEC Championship last year. Vlad’s been to a Final Four. And other guys in the locker room… we know what it takes, and we had guys step up big time tonight. Vlad [Goldin], Tre, Roddy [Gayle Jr.], I thought Rubin [Jones] was phenomenal defensively. You need everyone to win a championship.

“We got one more tomorrow to do what we want to do, and we need everyone to step up again.”
