The Michigan Wolverines pulled off an 80-76 win over the Northwestern Wildcats on Sunday afternoon in Ann Arbor, moving to 14-4 on the season and a 6-1 mark in Big Ten play with a game at Purdue looming on Friday.

Michigan ead coach Dusty May and Michigan players Nimari Burnett and Vladislav Goldin spoke to the media afterward to recap the outing and respond to an overtime loss at Minnesota on Thursday evening in the Twin Cities.

“Very proud of our guys to stay the course, especially immediately after the Minnesota game when you get beat on a half-court shot,” May said during his postgame press conference. “You could have a tendency to play afraid to lose and I thought our guys, they kept their composure, they stayed together and they played with great poise down the stretch, especially our free throw shooting, I thought all of our guards made big free throws. Vlad made several big free throws. Just a compliment to our guys staying the course and finding a way to beat the Northwestern program that we just talk about as a staff is as physical as anyone that we can remember playing.”

“They play a really practical, smart brand of basketball where they challenge every catch, they challenge every spot. And they just have a really good feel for reading the tales of the game. So very happy to get out of here with a win. We’ve got a lot to clean up and we have to improve, but we’re still learning a lot about ourselves.”

Burnett on playing another overtime game: “It was definitely like, ‘oh, this again?’ But you know, we learned from the last one and learned what we need to do in order to pull off a win. And that’s just about valuing every single possession in front of us and having the team effort into rebounding and getting the best shot on offense. And I think we did a great job with that.”

Graduate center Vladislav Goldin

Goldin on Northwestern matchup: “They are a physical team. And we kind of we still need the time to understand how physical a Big Ten team is . We played a couple of new teams and it kind of like doesn’t show exactly what Big Ten teams are. But this team is an old erteam who knows how to play together and who played Big Ten games a long time and it’s something that’s hard to adjust to. But I feel like we made good adjustments in the second half and came stronger.”
