Below is a portion of the Michigan coach’s opening comments:

“Thank you guys for being here. First, I want to thank the Man upstairs for all the many blessings he’s given me and my family [and for] the time here at Michigan. I can’t thank Him enough. Don’t worry, there won’t be any profanities following that.

“Second thing, I want to thank Coach Harbaugh, for the faith that he’s had and has displayed for me over the last six years and for supporting my growth as a football coach over time, and putting me in great position to lead the program. He gave me the opportunity last season to serve as the interim head coach during some of the biggest games of the year. His development and guidance have helped me to put me in the position that I am in today. I am always grateful for him. He’s forever a Michigan man and a Michigan legend.

“Next, our athletic director, Warde Manuel, for putting the faith and trust in me to be the leader of this program. He continually supports our athletic department, football team, basketball baseball — tremendous leader, tremendous support throughout this athletic department, and we thank you, Warde, for supporting the hires of the coaches to help us win Big Ten championships three times in a row and a national championship.

“I want to thank president [Santa] Ono and the board of regents for believing in me. The alignment from the top of the university to where it reaches our program has been critical to our success — and it’s greatly appreciated by coaches, staff, players, and we can’t thank you guys enough.

“We will do everything, each day, as a team, to continue the legacy of championship football that has been played here at the University of Michigan for the past 144 years. I prepared my entire coaching career for this moment, for this opportunity, and I can’t think of a better place to do it than the University of Michigan. The city of Ann Arbor, the state of Michigan is home.”
