WATCH: Michigan forced to turn attention elsewhere for portal QB, more
The Michigan Wolverines have been in the market for a quarterback via the transfer portal over the last week or so as veteran insurance to Bryce Underwood, but it now appears that it will not be former Maryland signal-caller Billy Edwards Jr.
After reports over the weekend that the Wolverines were in the driver’s seat for the Big Ten starter, Monday came with the news that he was trending toward Wisconsin and canceled his Michigan visit. Unless something changes, and it could in the fast-changing portal era, it appears the pursuit will have to be focused elsewhere.
TheWolverine.com’s Anthony Broome and Clayton Sayfie discussed the development on Monday’s show, in addition to the portal commitment from wide receiver Donaven McCulley, other targets on the board, bowl game opt outs and much more.
“One of the things that every other school that talks to him is going to say in negatively recruiting Michigan is there’s going to be Bryce Underwood talk kind of bubbling the entire time you’re there,” Sayfie said of the attempted Edwards recruitment. “If you throw an interception or you don’t play well in a game or anything happens, everyone’s going to be talking about Bryce Underwood behind you. I don’t know if those are the exact conversations that Billy Edwards had with the Wisconsin staff or if they tried to play that card, bu how could it not be something that’s in the back of Edward’s head as he’s going through this process?”

“When we reported that there was strong interest on both sides, some Michigan fans were disappointed because Billy Edwards isn’t necessarily a great quarterback. He’s been okay and he spent one year as the starter at Maryland was the backup to Taulia Tagovailoa the last couple of years, Michigan fans know him pretty well because he came in and played quite a bit in the last two meetings against Maryland off the bench.
“I would say I would be willing to wait this thing out and see what happens if they do land somebody better because I think that’s certainly possible. He’s not like he was the number one-rated quarterback in the transfer portal coming out. I would just say that waiting and seeing exactly what Michigan does is probably the smart move.”
