WATCH: Reacting to Michigan football's spot in the AP Poll, Monday media takeaways
The Michigan Wolverines are the No. 9 team in the country in the first-released AP Poll of the 2024 season, which sends the preseason hype and anxiety into overdrive for a ton of fans. But did the poll get U-M’s spot in the national pecking order right?
TheWolverine.com’s Anthony Broome and Clayton Sayfie discussed the poll on Monday’s show, in addition to takeaways from Monday’s fall camp press conferences and a Q&A from The Fort.

“I never really have too many huge reactions to these because they’re kind of irrelevant,” Sayfie said of the poll. “It feels about right coming in. The one thing I disagree with is when some people vote on these and take schedule into account where it’s like, ‘Oh, this team has an easy schedule, like Penn State, maybe that’s why they’re one spot ahead of Michigan at No. 8 where they avoided Oregon and Michigan this season. So, they have an easier path. Maybe I’ll look better as a voter if I have them higher.’ And at the end of the year, they finish higher because of their schedule. I don’t know how everyone voted and what their criteria is, but it’s definitely interesting to look at.
“Since 2004, every national champ ranked among the AP’s preseason top seven, except for Florida State in 2013. They started 11th, and Auburn in 2010 started 22nd. So Michigan’s outside that line right now, of course, it’s just historical data to tell us what the trends are saying, which I find interesting.

“But the 12-team playoff is here. So it’s going to be interesting to see if the best team be able to win a certain amount of games in a row to win the national title. Will the five-seed as we talked about, a month or two ago on this show being actually the best spot out of anybody as a non-conference champion going into the playoffs?
“How much do the rankings matter when the seeding is going to be kind of jumbled up with conference champions in the top four, a group of five team getting in? So much to talk about with this, it’s just really interesting and it gets you excited for the season.”
