WATCH: The latest on Michigan's QB battle, Dusty May's staff and portal pursuits
The Michigan Wolverines are busy in several sports, headlined by spring football and a quarterback battle without a clear frontrunner. Heading into the second to last week of spring practice, there is a lot of work to do there.
Some have tabbed Michigan junior Alex Orji as the current frontrunner, but nobody has taken the gig and run with it. TheWolverine.com’s Anthony Broome, Clayton Sayfie and Chris Balas discussed during the Monday night show.
“More than anything, we’re hearing about a lack of explosive plays,” Balas said, citing observers inside the building. “And the one comment that stood out to me yesterday from a guy at practice was that getting first downs is a win right now for this offense against this defense because that’s how good the defense is. So the good news is, they’re going against one of the best defenses in the country. The bad news is, is a couple of guys have been banged up on the offensive line and haven’t played a whole heck of a lot. The quarterbacks, in my opinion… Michigan is probably gonna have to go to the portal and find somebody in that late portal period, because I just don’t see the starting quarterback of a championship group on this team.
“And he would hate to waste a defense like that on a guy [who can’t get it done]. You’d hate to be Iowa, I guess is what I would call it. So the offensive line is going to be better. And I don’t mean they will be as bad as Iowa. There’s no way. They have better backs and a better offensive line, but you want a quarterback that can throw a little bit too.

“I don’t think Michigan has that right now. And I don’t think Jack Tuttle’s the answer either. He couldn’t earn the starting job at Indiana. He’s in his seventh year now. He still hasn’t started anywhere. Why do we expect him to be the savior of this program or the guy who’s going to lead this program to a potential Big Ten title? That’s my concern. I think the receivers from what we’ve heard are playing well and [tight end] Max Bredeson is having one hell of a spring as well.”
