ANN ARBOR – Michigan Wolverines head football coach Sherrone Moore was on hand Tuesday morning at the Champions Circle Golf Classic in Ann Arbor raising money for NIL efforts at the university. There is a certain amount of branding and charisma that comes with sitting in the big chair, and Moore already has his own catchphrase that has been popularized.

Moore has become famous for the use of “Smash” as a rallying cry for his group, coming up with the offensive line and then bleeding over into the entirety of the football team. Now that he runs the show in Ann Arbor, it has become instantly recognizable.

Moore told The Wolverine at Tuesday’s event where it came from.

“I can tell you exactly where it stated,” Moore said from the Champions Circle Golf Classic on Tuesday morning in Ann Arbor. “It started in the Washington game in 2021 and we’re playing at night. It’s a Maize out and we’re rocking all blue and we’re starting to run the ball. I’m seeing the guys with this mentality, this physicality. And I just kind of blacked out a little bit. I just started saying ‘Smash’ and that kind of became the mantra of the room and kind of grew with the team.

“It just means a violent mentality that you’re not going to stop until the other team submits and taps out. That’s what we want to be. Regardless of its offense, defense, running the ball, throwing the ball playing coverage, blitzing, whatever we’re doing, we’re playing all out and we’re not going to stop.”

Later this week, Moore and a Michigan contingent of senior running back Donovan Edwards, fullback Max Bredeson and defensive back Makari Paige make their way to Indianapolis for Big Ten Football Media Days. The players were chosen to make the trip due in large part to how they help set the identity for the program as senior leaders.

“We’re big on bringing those guys that have been here for four years that have been through the battles, been through the grind and understand it,” Moore revealed. “All those guys have done that, all high achievers on the field, but all high achievers off the field and guys that represent the program in the right way.

“For me it was pretty easy to pick those three. Those guys are guys that are leaders on the team that just do everything the right way and we’re proud to be Michigan Wolverines.”

Big Ten Media Days is the unofficial lead in to fall camp, which is set to get underway on July 31 in Ann Arbor. The season starts on Aug. 31 with a 7:30 p.m. kick at Michigan Stadium against the Fresno State Bulldogs.
