EAST LANSING – It would not be a Michigan vs. Michigan State meet-up in any sport without a rivalry altercation. MSU earned a hard-fought 79-62 win over the Wolverines, but its Senior Day tradition is the topic of postgame conversation.

In the final minute of Sunday’s loss, freshmen guards Phat Phat Brooks and LJ Cason were standing at mid-court during a foul shot attempt as MSU guard Tre Hollomon, who had 20 points in the win, approached the U-M freshmen standing on the logo, which led to a shove and both Tom Izzo and Dusty May, among others, diffusing the situation on the floor.

May was asked to address what happened during his postgame press conference, where he pushed back on the thought that Michigan players were in the wrong.

“I didn’t know there was a tradition where they’re shooting a free throw and we have guys standing at half-court,” May said. “There’s not a tradition that we can’t stand at half-court as the game’s going on,” I’m not familiar with that one. Is that a tradition?”

A follow-up question asked him specifically about MSU’s tradition of seniors kissing the floor as they leave it for the final time. He said he had no issue with it and that the Spartans, who won the Big Ten outright, earned the right to do that.

“Oh, yeah. No problem with that,” May said. “Obviously, [the court-kissing] took a while, but we’re fine with that. They’ve earned the right for that. The seniors have poured their hearts out.

“As far as whatever happened: Are we not allowed to stand at half-court while they’re shooting a free throw? Oh, you are? Okay. They earned the right to rub our noses in it. It is what it is. We have to play better, we have to get tougher. And so we move along, and we have to compete for another championship this week.”

Michigan finished 22-9 and 14-6 in Big Ten play during the regular season. It will be the No. 3 seed in the Big Ten Tournament in Indianapolis and play on Friday night around 9 p.m. ET.
