Michigan football will start spring practices in the coming weeks, and the Wolverines will hold their annual spring game April 20 at The Big House. It will be the public’s first glimpse of the U-M program under new head coach Sherrone Moore.

Yesterday marked one month since Michigan won the national championship with a 34-13 win over Washington Jan. 8 in Houston. The Wolverines have now won 12 national titles in program history.

According to Benjamin Allbright, who writes about the Denver Broncos, Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy is viewed much more favorably by front offices than he is by fans. McCarthy is largely viewed as the projected fourth quarterback off the board, behind USC’s Caleb Williams, North Carolina’s Drake Maye and LSU’s Jayden Daniels.

McCarthy was projected to be picked No. 12 overall to the Broncos in NFL.com analyst Lance Zierlein’s mock draft.

Denver may move on from quarterback Russell Wilson, who was benched at the end of the 2023 campaign in favor of Jarrett Stidham, this offseason. Head coach Sean Payton and Co. will need to pick up a cheap quarterback (such as a rookie like McCarthy), since they’re expected to take an $85 million dead-money salary cap hit if they follow through with cutting Wilson.

“NFL evaluators have described McCarthy’s processing as ‘elite’ in my conversations with them,” Zierlein wrote. “[Former New Orleans Saints quarterback] Drew Brees was a great processer, but he didn’t have the same athletic ability that McCarthy offers. This just feels like a Sean Payton pick.”

The 6-foot-3, 202-pounder was named first-team All-Big Ten and became Michigan’s first-ever winner of the Griese-Brees Big Ten Quarterback of the Year award this past season.
