Michigan basketball wing Caleb Houstan was considered a “pro at the prom” as an NBA talent. This refers to being ready for the next level in high school. NBA rules prevent that, which led him to Juwan Howard and the Wolverines.

The five-star talent is staying at the top of draft boards regardless.

ESPN’s Jonathan Givony and Mike Schmitz released an updated mock draft on Thursday where Houstan comes off the board with the sixth overall pick to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Houstan made his college debut for Michigan in an 88-76 win over Buffalo on Wednesday night. He scored 11 points on 4-for-7 shooting with six rebounds and two assists in 28 minutes. It looks like he will be able to plug-and-play right into the role left behind by Isaiah Livers, and then some.

Givony profiled Houstan’s performance for Team Canada in the FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup over the summer. While he did not have a sterling shooting performance, the skill-set was similar to what we saw on Wednesday.

Houstan was also one of the most impactful defenders at the tournament, demonstrating elite awareness off the ball as well as the ability to get up and guard smaller players with his quick feet and tough-minded approach.

Houstan’s shooting percentages will look better in a more compact role at Michigan, and NBA teams will surely be attracted to the versatility he brings on the wing as well as his cerebral approach. He made a case to be considered a potential top-five pick next year.

Houstan reclassified from the 2022 class to join the Wolverines this season, making what he has done so far all the more impressive.

Houstan and the Wolverines are back in action on Saturday night against Prairie View A&M. That contest will take place in Washington, D.C. as part of the Coaches vs. Racism Game and will tip at 8 p.m. ET.
