Breaking down the three most pivotal games for Michigan football in 2023

LB Ernest Hausmann: No. 21 overall, No. 1 linebacker

Previous school: Nebraska

Breakdown: Hausmann was a standout during his freshman season at Nebraska, totaling 54 tackles, 2 stops for loss, 1 sack and 1 fumble recovery, and made his mark during spring ball. He led all tacklers with 8 stops in the spring game, also forcing a fumble that was recovered by the defense.

Hausmann is expected to compete for starter-like snaps during fall camp and throughout the season, firmly in the top three at the position alongside junior Junior Colson and graduate Michael Barrett.

OL Drake Nugent: No. 31 overall, No. 3 interior offensive lineman

Previous school: Stanford

Breakdown: One of the most highly-regarded interior offensive linemen in the country, transfer or not, Nugent was named preseason first-team All-American by Walter Football. Pro Football Focus (PFF) also ranked the former Stanford team captain the No. 1 center in the nation, after he posted an 84.1 run-blocking grade, which slotted third among all centers in the country last season.

A two-time All-Pac-12 honorable mention, Nugent has appeared in 27 games with 24 starts during his college football career.

OL LaDarius Henderson: No. 36 overall, No. 4 interior offensive lineman

Previous school: Arizona State

Breakdown: Henderson appeared in 33 games with 29 starts over four seasons with the Sun Devils. He was a team captain in 2022. Henderson joined the Michigan team this summer.

Henderson has positional versatility. He was Arizona State’s left tackle as a freshman in 2019, before playing both right guard and right tackle in 2020. He then slid over to left guard, where he played all of his offensive snaps over the last two seasons (2021-22).

EDGE Josaiah Stewart: No. 67 overall, No. 7 EDGE

Previous school: Coastal Carolina

Breakdown: The 6-2, 230-pounder is undersized for an edge rusher in the Big Ten, but he was productive in the Sun Belt and garnered rave reviews in Ann Arbor this spring. He started 17 games and appeared in 24, earning All-Sun Belt honors twice (first team, 2021; second team, 2022).

Stewart set the program’s single-season sack record with 12.5 in 2021, when he earned freshman All-America honors by the Football Writers Association of America, ESPN and The Athletic, before recording 10 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks in 2022.

OL Myles Hinton: No. 180 overall, No. 14 offensive tackle

Previous school: Stanford

Breakdown: The 6-7, 320-pounder and younger brother of former Michigan defensive tackle Christopher Hinton played in 23 games with 16 starts at right tackle during his time in Palo Alto. A shoulder injury held him out of the end of last season, but he’s fully healthy now.

CB Josh Wallace: No. 185 overall, No. 33 cornerback

Previous school: UMass

Breakdown: Wallace committed to Michigan June 7 and has vaulted up the rankings even since entering the portal May 25. He’s a veteran through and through, with 39 games and 2,197 defensive snaps under his belt at the college level. The three-time captain stands 6-0, 190 pounds and has racked up 24 pass breakups and 3 interceptions in his career.

He was the No. 1 available cornerback before he made his June 7 pledge.

TE A.J. Barner: No. 13 tight end

Previous school: Indiana

Breakdown: The 6-foot-6, 250-pounder prides himself on run blocking, but he has a proven track record as a pass-catcher, as well. The former Indiana team captain has played in 30 games with nine starts, totaling 42 grabs for 361 yards and 4 touchdowns. Most of his production (28 receptions for 199 yards and 3 scores) came in 10 outings last season.

K James Turner: No. 14 kicker

Previous school: Louisville

Breakdown: Turner is a two-time All-ACC honorable mention (2020 and 2022), and is coming off his best season yet. In 2022, he drilled 20 of his 22 field goal attempts. For his career, he’s 46-of-57 on field goals and 121-of-123 on extra points. He’s made 11 of his 16 kicks of 40-plus yards.

QB Jack Tuttle: No. 73 quarterback

Previous school: Indiana

Breakdown: Tuttle was a career backup at Indiana — playing in 15 games with five spot starts — and is slated to play the same role in his final season of eligibility at Michigan. The former Indiana team captain completed 104 of his 182 pass attempts for 901 yards with 5 touchdowns and 6 interceptions with the Hoosiers.
