Michigan is now ranked No. 18 in the 2023 On3 Consensus national team recruiting rankings after landing a commitment from Oswego (Ill.) High tight end Deakon Tonielli.

Tonielli committed to Michigan over offers from Illinois, Tennessee, Michigan State, Cincinnati and others. At 6-foot-5, 200 pounds, Tonielli ranks as the No. 24 tight end and No. 472 overall prospect, per the On3 consensus rankings. On3 is higher on Tonielli than most in the industry, ranking him as a four-star.

Tonielli’s pledge provides U-M with their first tight end commitment of the 2023 class, after signing two in 2022.

The Wolverines have a total score of 88.819, placing them just behind No. 17 Florida State, which has a score of 89.175.

But, Michigan is very much in play for Top 100 prospects like quarterback Dante Moore, wide receivers Johntay Cook and Jalen Brown, EDGE prospect Nyckoles Harbor, defensive back Javien Toviano, ATH Jacobe Johnson as well as other top targets Enow Etta, Jaxon Howard and more. And that means the Wolverines should move up the rankings soon.

During the month of June, U-M has hosted a number of these prospects on official official visits.

The seventh member of the 2023 Michigan recruiting class, Tonielli joins Top 100 linebacker Raylen Wilson, Consensus four-star running back Cole Cabana, three-star wide receiver Semaj Morgan, three-star defensive lineman Brooks Bahr, three-star running back Benjamin Hall and highly touted kicker Adam Samaha.

Michigan is looking to take around 25 prospects this cycle.

Michigan is the fourth highest ranked Big Ten school, trailing Ohio State and Penn State and Michigan State.
