As we predicted Friday, Michigan was without Will Johnson in a game with Minnesota Saturday, a 27-24 U-M victory that shouldn’t have been as close as it was. The Wolverines were without standout senior defensive end Josaiah Stewart, too, and lost starting left tackle Myles Hinton during the game.

Head coach Sherrone Moore said both Johnson and Stewart gave it a go in pregame.

“Both of those guys were game time decisions,” Moore said. “We had them both in pregame and trying to see … they’re working through some things, so we just felt like that wasn’t time to put them out there,” Moore said.

Sophomore corner Jyaire Hill stepped up as CB1 in his place and played extremely well. His interception down the right sideline was a thing of beauty, and he was very good in coverage for most of the game. Senior TJ Guy, meanwhile, took over for Stewart on the edge and got some pressures.

“Obviously, Jyaire had a great pick — he’s steadily progressing and getting better and better and improving, and Aamir [Hall] made some big plays,” Moore said “I thought those guys picked up the slack and did some good things, and we’ll see how those other guys are feeling for next week. … [and] TJ Guy played really, really good. He was in the backfield a lot.”

Hinton seemed to have issues with his back, and it got to the point where veteran Jeff Persi replaced him. Center Dominick Giudice, too, was hobbled with what appeared to be a lower body injury. He spent much of the game playing through it.

“They’re just working through some little things,” Moore said. “Both of those guys are really tough guys playing through stuff. That’s part of playing line at Michigan. You’re going to get dinged up, but both those guys will be good.”

Michigan travels to Washington next week looking to improve to 3-0 in Big Ten play.
