Smigiel Recruitment

Smigiel committed to Michigan over fellow finalist South Carolina.

Michigan extended an offer to Smigiel back in January of 2023. The Wolverines hosted him for multiple visits and were on the verge of landing his commitment last summer.

However, Michigan took a verbal pledge from Brady Hart just a day before Smigiel was set to return to Ann Arbor for another visit. Hart has since decommitted, reclassified and signed with Texas A&M. The Wolverines also went all in on NIL and signed five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood last cycle.

Smigiel committed to Florida State but backed out his pledge to the Seminoles in the winter. Smigiel once again became an option for Michigan after the arrival of new offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey, who recruited the Top 100 prospect at North Carolina.

Lindsey saw Smigiel on the road twice and locked him in for a visit for the spring game earlier this month. Washington was trending for Smigiel on the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine. However, the Huskies went in a different direction.

Here is what Holland had to say about his recruitment.

“Washington was the heavy favorite on the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine, but the Huskies landed a different quarterback,” Holland said. “The door became open for Michigan to make a move on his visit last weekend. The Wolverines were trending to land three-star quarterback Nathan Bernhard. However, Michigan decided to prioritize Smigiel. While he’s ranked high, he’s not elite and will likely continue to drop. Smigiel is a high floor prospect who should be a serviceable option in the quarterback room.”

At 6-foot-4, 215 pounds, Smigiel is ranked as the No. 9 quarterback and No. 92 overall recruit nationally, per the On3 Industry Ranking. He is also ranked as the No. 14 overall prospect in the state of California this cycle.

Michigan now has four commits in its 2026 recruiting class — Smigiel, On300 Jacksonville (Fla.) Mandarin cornerback Brody Jennings, three-star Cartersville (Ga.) Cass offensive lineman Bear McWhorter and three-star Dallas (Texas) Parish Episcopal wide receiver Jaylen Pile.

Michigan entered the day with the No. 42 ranked 2026 recruiting class nationally, per the On3 Industry team recruiting rankings. Michigan is also ranked No. 12 in the Big Ten. USC currently has the top class in the conference.
