Smith Recruitment

Michigan quarterbacks coach Kirk Campbell saw Smith throw live in October and extended an offer during his first ever unofficial visit for the game against Purdue in November.

Campbell pushed for Smith’s verbal commitment and earned it just a little more than a week following the trip to Ann Arbor.

“It was awesome,” Smith told The Wolverine. “It was great to get up there and get around the coaching staff. I walked around the campus and got a feel for everything. I got a facility tour. Friday was mainly hanging around the coaches, the players and the people in the building. For it being my first game, it really impressed. It was definitely a sight to see.”

Smith committed to Michigan over offers from Florida, Florida State, Maryland, Miami, Ole Miss, Penn State, Texas A&M, Virginia Tech, West Virginia and a handful of others.

Smith passed for 2,223 yards and 29 touchdowns with four interceptions and also rushed for 715 yards and 19 touchdowns as a junior last season. He was named the Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of Florida.

At 6-foot-3, 180 pounds, Smith is ranked as the No. 9 quarterback and No. 112 overall prospect nationally, per On3. He is also ranked as the No. 17 recruit in the state of Florida for next cycle.
