Smigiel Recruitment

Michigan extended an offer to Smigiel back in January of 2023. The Wolverines have hosted him for multiple visits and were on the verge of landing his commitment last summer.

However, Michigan took a verbal pledge from Brady Hart just a day before Smigiel was set to return to Ann Arbor for another visit. Hart has since decommitted, reclassified and signed with Texas A&M. The Wolverines also went all in on NIL and signed five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood last cycle.

Smigiel committed to Florida State but backed out his pledge to the Seminoles in the winter. Smigiel once again became an option for Michigan after the arrival of new offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey, who recruited the Top 100 prospect at North Carolina.

Lindsey saw Smigiel on the road twice and locked him in for a visit for the spring game this weekend. Washington was trending for Smigiel on the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine. However, the Huskies appear to be going in a different direction.

Here is what Holland had to say about his recruitment.

“Washington is the heavy favorite on the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine, but it looks like the Huskies are going to land a different quarterback,” Holland said. “That means the door is wide open for Michigan to make a move on his visit this weekend. The Wolverines are already trending to land three-star quarterback Nathan Bernhard. However, it looks like Michigan wants to see where it stands with Smigiel first. Bernhard is a high upside prospect who needs to keep working on his mechanics. On the flip side of the coin, Smigiel is a high floor prospect who would be a serviceable option in the quarterback room.”

South Carolina and UCLA are the other competitors in this recruitment.

At 6-foot-4, 215 pounds, Smigiel is ranked as the No. 8 quarterback and No. 84 overall recruit nationally, per the On3 Industry Ranking. He is also ranked as the No. 13 overall prospect in the state of California this cycle.

Michigan currently has three commits in its 2026 recruiting class in On300 Jacksonville (Fla.) Mandarin cornerback Brody Jennings, three-star Cartersville (Ga.) Cass offensive lineman Bear McWhorter and three-star Dallas (Texas) Parish Episcopal wide receiver Jaylen Pile.
