On this week’s episode of the TheWolverine.com podcast, Clayton Sayfie, Anthony Broome and Chris Balas discuss Michigan Wolverines football and basketball topics, including which freshmen will have the biggest impact on the gridiron, Kentucky wing Antonio Reeves planning to return to the Wildcats (and not enter the transfer portal), U-M basketball’s non-conference schedule that was just released and the 2023 NBA Draft, which is Thursday.

We began by breaking down some of the freshmen who could make an impact on offense. Two names were most prominently discussed, with one being running back Cole Cabana.

On the Michigan defense, the unanimous top choice was cornerback Jyaire Hill — the most likely candidate of the 2023 group to start games this fall. There’s a vacant starting cornerback spot, and while he may not win it right away, there’s a chance he could secure it at some point this season.

It appears Kentucky wing Antonio Reeves — who was rumored to be considering transferring and taking classes at Illinois State this summer in order to graduate — will be staying in Lexington, according to multiple reports, including from On3’s Kentucky site. Michigan was thought of to be a contender if Reeves did enter the transfer portal. Now, the Wolverines will have to look elsewhere to potentially fill their two remaining scholarship openings.

Michigan is likely to have a pair of first-round NBA Draft picks Thursday night in guards Kobe Bufkin and Jett Howard. If they wind up going in the opening round, they’ll be Michigan’s 10th and 11th first-round selections since 2013. Bufkin’s stock has been on the rise lately, and there’s speculation he’ll go in the lottery (first 14 picks). If he goes top 10, as some projections have him, he’d be the Wolverines’ fourth top-10 choice since 2013, joining Trey Burke (ninth in 2013), Nik Stauskas (8th in 2014) and Franz Wagner (eighth in 2021).
