Xavier coach Sean Miller after blowout loss to Michigan: 'We lost to a really good team'
Michigan and Xavier under coach Sean Miller had one common opponent heading into Wednesday night’s game in Fort Myers, Fla. — Wake Forest, a team U-M lost to by two and the Musketeers handled 75-60. Miller watched film of the Wolverines’ game with Wake to do some scouting, and he came to an obvious conclusion after Michigan trounced his team, 78-53, to capture a tournament title.
“Dusty [May] is an excellent coach … obviously, I think they’ve really improved as a team from two or three weeks ago until now,” Miller said. “And that’s what this is about — getting better, improving.
“… On our end, we have 14 turnovers [at halftime], and look, some of it was Michigan’s pressure. Some of it was self inflicted on our end … the game got out of hand. It’s not like our guys quit. It’s just their depth continued to wear on us and [wear us] down.”
They lost to a “really good team,” Miller added, one that played stifling defense and got a great performance from big man Danny Wolf. Wolf had been struggling heading in, but he played with confidence, found his stroke from long range in hitting four triples and finished with 20 points.

“I thought Danny Wolf at halftime played about as well as an individual could,” Miller praised. “He was 4-for-4 from three. It wasn’t like we were letting him shoot, although coming into the game he had struggled from three. And he was dominant.
“… I tip my hat to Danny Wolf. I talked about his first half, but it wasn’t like he didn’t play well in the second. He had 20 points, 14 rebounds, 4-for-5 from three, three assists, two steals, one block. That’s an All-American effort, and he looked like an All-American player. He’s a terrific player.”
And the Wolverines’ size was “striking,” Miller added.
“They just can wear you down physically size-wise,” he said. “… I thought we lost to a better team tonight. Where this all goes eight, 12 weeks from now, I don’t know, but tonight, their depth, their size [was impressive].”
