Mississippi State collected another addition from the transfer portal on Tuesday afternoon when former Illinois transfer defensive lineman Anthony Johnson announced his commitment to the Bulldogs.

The 6-foot-3 and 295-pound Johnson, an Ohio native, officially visited Mississippi State last month and also held offers from Michigan State, Georgia Tech and Kansas State among others. He spent his first three seasons at Youngstown State before transferring to Illinois this past January.

Johnson went through spring practice with Illinois before opting to enter the transfer portal again and he has one season of eligibility remaining. He totaled 25 tackles, four sacks and 8.5 tackles for loss last season at Youngstown State.

Overall, Johnson becomes the fourth transfer defensive lineman for Mississippi State this offseason. However, one of those transfers – Wilky Denaud – has already re-entered the transfer portal after spending one semester at State. Other defensive linemen transfers on the Bulldogs’ 2024 roster include Kedrick Bingley-Jones (North Carolina) and Sulaiman Kpaka (Purdue).

With Johnson’s decision, Mississippi State added its fourth addition from the spring transfer portal. The Bulldogs also added New Mexico State receiver Trent Hudson this past weekend and added Utah State running back Davon Booth and Memphis defensive back DeAgo Brumfield in April.
