Before ever stepping foot on campus, former Oklahoma transfer receiver Brenen Thompson committed and signed with Mississippi State for his final season of college football.

And that decision fully revolved around Thompson’s trust in Mississippi State head coach Jeff Lebby. Obviously, the two are familiar with each other since Lebby was Thompson’s offensive coordinator previously at Oklahoma.

“Just the trust I have in Coach Lebby,” explained the 5-foot-9 and 165-pound Thompson. “It’s just the belief and respect I have to him. When I came from Texas and went to Oklahoma, I played in his offense for a couple of years. So I am comfortable with his system and that should make for a smooth transition to Mississippi State.”

Thompson did manage to get his first in-person look at Mississippi State’s program last week. And during his official visit, Thompson said the environment and personality of the coaching staff caught his attention.

“The visit was nice,” recalled Thompson. “Everyone was so genuine and the environment really stood out to me. The players and coaches connect well there. It is a different area for me, though. I’m from the panhandle of Texas so we don’t see too many trees back home. But I like that and I like the different environment.”

Also while in Starkville, Thompson got to talk ball with his future receivers coach in Chad Bumphis. And he also appreciated the vibe he got from Bumphis.

“Coach Bump gives off good energy,” Thompson remarked. “We had good conversations and I just like the energy he brings. I can tell he’s a good coach and he gets it.”

Thompson was also able to meet and talk with a couple of his new Bulldog teammates during that official visit. He was also on campus when former Florida State quarterback transfer Luke Kromenhoek was visiting the Bulldogs.

“I know Isaac Smith and I’ve talked to Blake Shapen some,” Thompson noted. “Blake and I will get together soon when I get there in January so we can know each other better. And when I was on my visit, the Florida State quarterback (Luke Kromenhoek) that committed to Mississippi State was also there. So I got to meet him and it was cool.”

This past season the former On3 four-star prospect totaled 19 catches for 230 yards and two touchdowns. In the past two seasons the Spearman, Texas, native combined for 23 catches for 503 yards and four touchdowns. The 5-foot-9 and 165-pound Thompson is expected to play outside receiver for the Bulldogs and has one season of remaining eligibility.

“I can play both slot and outside receiver,” Thompson added. “I did both at Oklahoma so it is nothing new for me. In Coach Lebby’s system I should be able to play both and make plays wherever. Coach Lebby’s system allows the receivers to go make plays and I’m ready for all of that.”
