2025 State commit Derrion Horsley set for Friday's season opener
This Friday things get real for 2025 Mississippi State commitment Derrion Horsley and his East Coweta (Ga.) High School teammates. After spending the past few weeks on the practice fields, the On3 three-star cornerback opens his final prep campaign in just a couple more days.
Naturally, Horsley is eager to get things started and display his offseason improvements. Horsley is rated as the nation’s No. 91 cornerback and the state’s No. 90 prospect by On3 rankings.
“We started practice a couple of weeks ago,” Horsley recalled. “We do helmets and then do a lot of team stuff before we go to the weight room. We already had our acclimation week and we started in full pads on the first of August.”
Similar to last season, Horsley expected to play a role in all three aspects of the game. In the defensive backfield, he has a few things on his to-do list this season, as well.
“So far I’m practicing at cornerback, receiver, kick returner and punt returner,” remarked the 6-foot-3 and 185-pound Horsley. “At cornerback I’m trying to get better with my technique. I want to be more physical, too, and work on my patience.”
Horsley officially visited Mississippi State in June and ended up committing to the Bulldogs that same weekend. He noted that he has plans to be in Davis Wade Stadium this season and said his relationships remain strong with the staff.
“I was supposed to go to our cookout at Coach Lebby’s house on July 25th,” mentioned Horsley. “But I couldn’t make it because of our practices are our school. But it’s been great since I committed to them and the coaches have checked up on me a lot. I plan to be down there for some games this season.”

In particular, Horsley has discussed his Bulldog future often of late with State cornerbacks coach Corey Bell. Within those talks, Horsley is already getting useful tips and advice from Bell about his game.
“I mainly talk to Coach Bell,” added Horsley. “We talk football and everything. We talk a lot about their defense and my film and how I can improve. He lets me know what all they have going on there and what I’m doing with my team.”
For now, things have quieted down for Horsley on the recruiting trail since he committed to Mississippi State. And he remains confident that he made the right call this summer to join the Bulldogs’ Class of 2025.
“Recruiting has slowed down a lot since I committed,” Horsley noted. “I may have more coaches reach out if I have a great senior season. But I feel good about my decision with Mississippi State.”
