Dominant pitching leads State past Georgia Southern in series opener

The Mississippi State Bulldogs used strong pitching performances en route to a 5-1 victory over Georgia Southern in the series opener. The Dawgs pitching staff struck out 15 hitters and limited the Eagles to six hits. Nate Dohm led the team with 10 strikeouts on the night. 

Nate Dohm drew the start for the Diamond Dawgs, picking up his first victory of the year. He had an outstanding performance, only allowing four hits and one walk in 6 2/3 innings of work, his longest outing in the Maroon and White. 

Following the outing by Dohm, the duo of Gavin Black and Brooks Auger closed out the win for the Diamond Dawgs. The duo combined for 2 1/3 innings pitched and had five strikeouts. This was the third time this season the Dawgs pitching staff had 13 or more strikeouts in a game. 

The Bulldogs’ had eight different players collect at least one hit. Logan Kohler and Amani Larry both had productive days at the plate today, going 3-for-4 and 2-for-4, respectively. Dylan Cupp led the team in RBIs with two, while David Mershon and Dakota Jordan both picked up one each. Johnny Long picked up one hit and had two hit by pitches for the Dawgs, while guiding the pitching staff to a strong outing on the day. 

The Dawgs and the Eagles return to action for game two on Saturday at 2 p.m. from Dudy Noble Field. The game will air on SECN+.
