2025 running back Geron Johnson discusses Mississippi State decision
Mississippi State entered the Class of 2025 recruiting cycle wanting to add more speed on both sides of the ball. Early on, the Bulldogs have done just that and added more speed to the class on Saturday.
2025 running back prospect Geron Johnson of Bartlett (Tenn.) announced his decision publicly on Sunday after delivering the news in person on Saturday. Johnson collected offers from Mississippi State and Ole Miss this month and also holds offers from Memphis and UNLV among others.
Johnson becomes the second running back to commit to State this month, joining former Cincinnati commit Kolin Wilson.
“Like I’ve been saying, it’s about the people at Mississippi State,” said Johnson. “It’s the environment, it’s the work ethic. It is not a team but it is a family. Everyone was just hanging out together during the weekend and it was just a vibe. It’s why I wanted to join them.”
Earlier this month, Johnson attended a pair of Mississippi State camps. In his first camp performance, Johnson posted a sub-4.3 forty time. This past season at Bartlett High School, Johnson rushed for 990 yards and 20 touchdowns.
The 6-foot and 180-pound Johnson is also the third commitment of the weekend as 2025 receiver Davian Jackson and 2025 offensive lineman Mario Nash committed to State this weekend.
“I made my decision on Saturday and I love Mississippi State,” explained Johnson. “I love Coach Lebby, the head coach, and he is awesome. I love the running backs coach, Coach Tucker, and the whole coaching staff is awesome. It’s where I want to be.”
Regarding his official visit, Johnson felt at home with his future coaches. And the best part of the weekend was being at head coach Jeff Lebby’s house.
“The weekend was very good and very exciting,” Johnson recalled. “Everyone treated me like family. The favorite part to me was at Coach Lebby’s house and all of the pool action. That was fun.”
He also picked up a few other skills while he was visiting the program. That included time inside the Seal Complex on Saturday with a cooking competition.

“That was a really cool part of the weekend,” added Johnson. “We had a cooking contest so me and my team had to work together to try to see how we would do. But I don’t think we won the competition (laughing).”
Regarding his player host, Johnson spent quality time with another Tennessee native on State’s offense. And he felt even more confident about his college decision after gaining more insight from his host.
“My host was CP, Chris Parson,” Johnson remarked. “It was very fun and he is a cook guy and I have a good relationship with him. He was telling me a lot about the program. He said the coaches are very loyal and that they are big on family.”
Naturally, Johnson also got to learn more about Lebby and running backs coach Anthony Tucker. He is excited about the future of Lebby’s offense and is eager to get his opportunities in that fast-tempo scheme.
“My talks with Coach Lebby and Coach Tucker were great,” noted Johnson. “They were telling me that they want me there. Their message was they are ready to use me in their offense and let me go to work.”
Mississippi State kicked off its first summer official visits last weekend in solid fashion. The Bulldogs entered last weekend with just four commitments in the Class of 2025 and then last weekend, a total of nine official visitors joined State’s class. While the total will keep rising this weekend and next week, State’s Class of 2025 now includes 15 commitments.
