2025 receiver Isaiah Mitchell breaks down decision to flip from Cincinnati to Mississippi State
In early November, 2025 receiver prospect Isaiah Mitchell committed to Cincinnati and figured his recruiting process was finished. But things changed this past weekend during his official visit to Mississippi State.
Before leaving Starkville, the Houston County (Ga.) High School standout flipped his commitment to Mississippi State and became the fourth receiver commitment for the Bulldogs, joining Davian Jackson, Anson Lewis and Ferzell Shepard.
“I just felt like it was the right move,” explained Mitchell. “It was just the coaching and the atmosphere. I can’t wait to get there in May and I can’t wait to get started.”
Mitchell noted that this weekend was a return visit to Mississippi State and he has attended a camp session before on campus. And with this weekend’s experience, being around the State coaching staff was his highlight of the visit.
“It was great being back,” Mitchell remarked. “The coaches were great and I had a great time with the coaches last night. So it was just a great weekend. When I sat down with the coaches, that was my favorite part.”
To no surprise, Mitchell’s player host was a familiar face, too, and was one of his former high school teammates from Houston County High School.
“My host was my boy Ricky Johnson,” recalled the 5-foot-11 and 170-pound Mitchell. “We came from the same school so that’s my boy. We had a great time chilling and we bonded. He let me know about the atmosphere there. He said they are going to change around a lot of things next year and told me to be ready to work.”
Mitchell saw his senior season end this past Friday in the third round of the Class 5A playoffs. Despite that bitter ending, Mitchell put up impressive numbers in his final prep campaign. Mitchell ended the year with 90 catches for 1,661 yards and 19 receiving touchdowns, which were all school records. He also threw four touchdown passes and had four rushing touchdowns.

“It was fun this year,” Mitchell mentioned. “We had a good season and I broke a lot of records. I stayed on top of everything and just went to work every day of the week.”
Naturally, Mitchell spent a good bit of time this weekend with head coach Jeff Lebby and receivers coach Chad Bumphis. His future coaches discussed the future with Mitchell and what they expect to change in the coming years.
“It was great with Coach Lebby,” added Mitchell. “We went to his house and man, he’s got a nice crib. We just talked a lot and I was with Coach Bump, too. Coach Bump said they’re going to keep working to improve things there and he wants me to be part of it.”
And while his college path changed this weekend, Mitchell left campus with a smile on his face and confident in the feedback he received from Lebby.
“Coach Lebby told me I’m a great kid and that I earned this opportunity,” Mitchell noted. “He said I deserved it and it was good hearing that from the head coach.”
