Jake Mangum has breakthrough MLB performance in win over Pirates

It hasn’t taken Jake Mangum long to make a little noise on the biggest stage of baseball.
After working seven years to get to the MLB, Mangum got the call to the Tampa Bay Rays last Saturday. An injury to outfielder Josh Lowe opened the door for Mangum to get his first shot in the big leagues.
Monday night brought some major returns for Mangum against Adam Frazier and the Pittsburgh Pirates. The former Diamond Dawg legend had hits in all four at bats and helped the Rays to a 6-1 victory over the Pirates.
Batting seventh in the lineup, Mangum got his first career hit with a single through the left side in the third inning and followed that up with a steal of second. Mangum came back up in the bottom of the fourth and came through with a two-run single through the right side. In the seventh inning, Mangum doubled to the warning track in right field.
Mangum would cap the night with a seven-pitch at bat in the eighth that ended with a single and stole second yet again. He finished the night 4-for-4 with two RBI, two stolen bases, a double, and a run scored. The fellow former Bulldog Frazier also had a hit in the game and drove in a run.

Mangum didn’t play in the first game on Saturday but has spent the last two days in the starting lineup. Against Colorado Rockies on Sunday night, Mangum was 0-for-3 but he got on base for the first time with a walk. He’s batting .571 in the first two games.
It’s no surprise to those that followed Mangum in the Maroon and White. Mangum never batted below .324 during his four years in Starkville with an SEC record 383 hits. He also had 229 runs scored, 73 doubles, 10 triples, five home runs, 126 RBI and batted .357 over 262 career games.
The Rays and Pirates will be back in action on Tuesday night at 6:05 p.m.
