On3 four-star cornerback Kyle Johnson officially signs with Mississippi State
On3 four-star cornerback Kyle Johnson spent the past five months committed to Houston. But all the while it was Mississippi State that remained on his mind.
The Bunkie (La.) High School standout followed that feeling on Wednesday and officially signed with Mississippi State. Johnson is rated as the nation’s No. 23 cornerback and the state’s No. 10 prospect.
“I committed to Mississippi State earlier this week,” Johnson explained. “It was just the environment. It felt like my hometown. I feel like going there I will be treated better in that environment. With the fans there, they play a tremendous role on game. So being in that environment is a blessing.”
Johnson officially visited Mississippi State and Houston back in June before he committed to Houston the following month. Johnson also officially visited Virginia in late November but that feeling he got in Starkville stayed with him throughout his recruitment.
“Really, on my first visit there I had a good feeling,” recalled Johnson, who will play in the Class 3A semifinals on Thursday. “Just going around their town and seeing what they had to offer, it was great. Their fans are bought in and I really appreciate that. That just made me feel comfortable in their town.”

Another factor for Johnson was the consistency of Mississippi State’s staff while he was committed to Houston. The Bulldogs never back off and maintained good relationships with Johnson and his family.
“That was really big, too,” Johnson added. “Coach Matt Barnes talked to me almost every week, just staying on me. The staff said they still wanted me and they never changed up on me. That meant a lot to me with my final decision.”
Johnson is expected to enroll at Mississippi State next May. He already has a check list for goals when he gets to campus with the top goal of helping the Bulldogs turn around their fortunes on the gridiron under head coach Jeff Lebby.
“I’m ready to get there,” noted Johnson. “I have to get bigger, faster and stronger. I want to help us earn some wins and hopefully we will be on top of the SEC soon.”
