Three Mississippi State commits earn Mr. Football honors inside the state
As another exciting high school football season is hitting its peak, the Mississippi High School Activities Association has named its Mr. Football winners in each classification.
Among the winners in the seven classifications are three Mississippi State commitments. Two players are seniors with another just a junior making a major impact in the state’s largest class.
In Class 1A, Bulldog linebacker commit Tyshun Willis ran away with the award on his level. The Falcons lost the first game of the year to Canton and have since won eight-straight games. Before a 35-7 win last week against Nanih Waiya, Velma Jackson had shutout the first four district opponents and they finished district play outscoring the five teams 209-7.
Willis is a huge reason for the team’s success as he works on both sides. On defense, Willis has 45 tackles with an unbelievable 31.0 TFL, 12.0 sacks, three fumble recoveries, three touchdowns, two forced fumbles, and a pass breakup. He’s had 34 carries for 520 yards and eight touchdowns, 16 catches for 291 yards and four touchdowns and, for good measure, eight punt returns for 446 yards.
The 6’1, 230-pound athlete is No. 206 nationally by the On3 Industry rankings and is the No. 23 EDGE in the country. He’s ranked as the state’s No. 8 player.
Velma Jackson attempts to make another run at the state title game as the playoffs begin on Friday for them. The Falcons are slated to take on Mount Olive on Friday.
The quarterback of the future earned the 3A Mr. Football award on Friday as Noxubee County’s Kamario Taylor grabbed well-earned recognition. Taylor is in the middle of trying to send his Tiger team to the state championship for a third-straight season as they’re 7-2 and playing in the first round on Friday night.

This year, Taylor has been exceptional with 1,766 yards passing, 25 touchdowns and four interceptions and he’s rushed 79 times for 825 yards and 11 touchdowns. He has led his team to six-straight wins since starting the season with a 1-2 mark and losses to Starkville and West Point. The Tigers won their Region 5 with a 4-0 mark and are playing St. Stanislaus to begin the playoffs.
Taylor is considered the highest rated player in State’s class as the 6’4 QB is ranked 110th nationally by the On3 Composite rankings while coming in at No. 10 at his position and No. 4 inside the state of Mississippi.
In the state’s largest classification of 7A, Tupelo’s running back Jaeden Hill is having a special year. The Golden Wave just finished off an undefeated regular season at 10-0 following another district title clinched at Starkville on Friday night.
Hill has 148 carries for 1,464 yards and 24 touchdowns on the year and averages an incredible 9.9 yards per rush with a total of six 100-yard games. He’s added 12 catches for 187 yards and two touchdowns.
The three-star RB is the rising star in the State class of 2026. He still has another year remaining, but Hill is already making waves. He and his Tupelo teammates begin playoff action next week at home against Lewisburg.
