An incredibly competitive SEC regular season has come to a close and the postseason awards are out.

Mississippi State was represented on Monday as the league selected 3B Ace Reese as a first-team selection and the SEC’s Newcomer of the Year. The first-team honor handed the Bulldogs a member on that list for the ninth-consecutive season and his Newcomer of the Year was the first in school history.

Since arriving in Starkville, Reese has become a Diamond Dawg star. He transferred to MSU in the offseason after a standout freshman season at Houston and he has hit another level as a sophomore.

Reese is leading the team nearly across the board in offensive stats and is currently on a 21-game hitting streak. The third baseman has a .360 batting average with 76 hits, 18 doubles, 21 home runs, 66 RBI and a .772 slugging %. He leads the league in total bases, is second in the SEC in home runs and SLG% and third in hits, batting average, RBI and doubles. His 21 home runs are currently 8th on the single-season charts at State.

Earlier on Monday, Reese was also named the SEC Player of the Week after going 8-for-12 in a three-game sweep of Missouri. Reese drove in four home runs during the series and had three doubles to lead the Diamond Dawgs to a .500 record in SEC play. He was also a finalist for the Boo Ferriss Trophy given to the state’s best baseball player. The award was won by Southern Miss RHP JB Middleton.

State heads into the SEC Tournament on Tuesday where they are set to take on Texas A&M at 8 p.m. at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium.
