As the transfer portal opened on Monday, not a lot of action came for Mississippi State just yet, but the Diamond Dawgs did lose a relatively big name.

Sophomore shortstop Dylan Cupp entered the portal after what was an up and down season for the Cedartown, Ga. native. Cupp came to Starkville after being one of the top defensive shortstops in the country out of high school and he turned down some interest in the MLB Draft out of high school.

A four-time All-State honoree in Georgia, Cupp was the state of Georgia’s Player of the Year as a sophomore and a senior. His final season, Cupp batted .550.

At State, Cupp was an immediate impact player for Chris Lemonis. He played in 22 games and had 21 starts before going down with a knee injury in the middle of the season and he didn’t return to the field in year one. Cupp batted .258 with 17 hits in those 22 games and had four doubles and 13 RBI. He fielded at a .926 clip at short with five errors.

As a sophomore, Cupp’s production went up at the plate but dipped in the field. He brought his batting average up to .282 in 33 games and had 24 hits, nine doubles, one home run and 15 RBI. His on base percentage was one of the best on the team when he was in the lineup at .451, but the defense was an issue for Cupp with a .905 fielding % and nine errors.

Due to Cupp’s struggles, Lemonis made a move at shortstop with Sawyer Reeves and the sophomore wasn’t able to get back in the lineup after Reeves locked that position down. At the Tallahassee Regional over the weekend, Cupp was not present as he was dealing with a family emergency.

Along with Cupp, MSU has already seen junior RHP Gavin Black and freshman OF Landis Davila enter the portal. There’s obviously more attrition expected and plenty of talent coming in out of the portal. New head coach Brian O’Connor and his staff are already involved with the next crop of State players.
