Dakota Jordan talks Mississippi State preseason process

Mississippi State’s third player has come off the board in night one of the MLB Draft.

After Jurrangelo Cijntje became Mississippi State’s 20th first round pick of all time, RHP Khal Stephen was taken in the second and RHP Nate Dohm the third, OF Dakota Jordan came off the board in the fourth round, 116th overall to the San Francisco Giants.

The second day selection wasn’t totally unexpected but a bit of a drop from the projected first or second round spot for Jordan. The Jackson native fell nearly 100 spots from his projection.

Jordan just finished off two impressive seasons as a Diamond Dawg and was draft eligible after his sophomore year. He finished his two seasons batting .336 with 132 hits in 107 games, 30 home runs, 23 doubles and 112 RBI with a .634 slugging percentage.

The best of his two years came this season when Jordan batted .354 and had 85 hits, 20 home runs, 14 doubles and 72 RBI. He was named the Boo Ferris Award winner as the best player in the state of Mississippi and was Second-Team All-SEC.

His number improved from a All-SEC Freshman season in which Jordan batted .307 and had 47 hits in 44 games with 10 home runs, nine doubles and 40 RBI.

Jordan came to State from Jackson Academy where he was Mississippi’s Gatorade Player of the Year. He broke school records in home runs, RBI, slugging percentage, batting average and on-base percentage during his time there and finished with a senior season that saw him bat .524 with 55 hits, 55 runs, 57 RBI, 28 walks and 16 home runs.

When Cijntje and Stephen came off the board, the Bulldogs have now had at least a second round pick in six-straight drafts with a total of 10 players being selected in that range since 2019. State signee Dante Nori from Michigan was also a first round pick with Cijntje as the Philadelphia Phillies took the talented outfielder with the 27th pick.
