Diamond Dawgs headed back to Tallahassee Regional

Mississippi State baseball is headed back to Tallahassee, Fla. for the NCAA Tournament.
The Regional pairing is now set for the Diamond Dawgs as State will be a three seed in the Tallahassee Regional with host Florida State the No. 9 overall seed. State will head to FSU along with two seed Northeastern and the four seed Bethune Cookman.
State and FSU have a long history in the NCAA Tournament. The Bulldogs have played the Seminoles 11 times and are 7-4 all-time in postseason play against them. State has been to Tallahassee five times now in the NCAA Tournament with Regional Championship victories in 2007 and 2018. State advanced to Omaha and the College World Series both times.
This marks the 41st tournament appearance in program history as the Bulldogs return to postseason for the second year in a row. The previous two seasons, State missed out on postseason altogether just after winning the school’s first National Championship in 2021.
State had to fight its way back into postseason contention this season and overcame the worst start in SEC play in school history. The Bulldogs began the schedule 1-9 in league play and finished winning 14 of the last 20 games to get to .500 in league play. The Diamond Dawgs won five of the last six series to close out the schedule and were 8-1 in the final three series with sweeps over Kentucky and Missouri and a series win over Regional host Ole Miss.

The final run to end the regular season came after Director of Athletics Zac Selmon relieved head coach Chris Lemonis of his duties following the Bulldogs’ series loss at Auburn. Under the direction of interim head coach Justin Parker and remaining staff members Jake Gautreau and Kyle Cheesebrough, State has won nine of the last 11 games and head into postseason relatively hot.
State (34-21) did go to the SEC Tournament and lay an egg last week in a 9-0 loss to Texas A&M, but history has shown that SECT performance doesn’t always reveal State’s postseason fate. MSU has gone without a win in the SECT five times prior to 2025 and all five times State would at least win the Regional with three College World Series appearances.
This year’s Bulldog team will have a chance to do the same beginning this weekend.
