Mississippi State's Josh Hubbard, Cam Matthews earn All-SEC honors

One of the most grueling SEC seasons in the conference’s storied history came to an end over the weekend and even more great moments could be on the way for the league.
With the conclusion of the regular season and the forthcoming SEC Tournament this week, the league announced its All-SEC teams on Monday. Mississippi State landed two selections on the teams as senior Cameron Matthews earned a spot on the All-Defensive team while sophomore guard Josh Hubbard was picked for the second team.
Matthews cementing legacy as Bulldog great
Matthews earned a prestigious selection on the All-Defensive team as he was one of just five players in the league to make the list. The Olive Branch native is finishing up his fifth season with the Bulldogs and has cemented himself as a legend for the program.
Perhaps no one in State basketball history has played his role better than Matthews. He was the glue that has held the team together for the last few years and has especially found a home under head coach Chris Jans.
In five years, Matthews has the school record with 164 games played and he is 24 points shy of joining the 1,000-point club. Scoring has been down the list of Matthews priorities as he’s averaged just 6.0 points per game in his career. He’s pulled down 850 rebounds, dished out 370 assists, swiped 269 steals and blocked 96 shots over the course of his career.
This season, Matthews is averaging his second most points in his career with 7.5 and battling for his best rebounding year at 6.7 boards per game. His 3.7 assists and 2.5 steals per game are the most in his career and he’s just three blocks shy of a new career-high as well.
This is the second season in a row that Matthews has earned All-Defensive honors. It’s only the second time in school history that State has had a player earn multiple seasons on the team and he joins Jarvis Varnado on that list.

Hubbard pushes forward with strong sophomore year
Fresh off of his second Howell Trophy win, Hubbard earned second-team All-SEC for the second time as well. The star shooter from MRA has quickly made a name for himself and followed up his fantastic freshman season with an even better one this year.
Hubbard has slid into the role of point guard this year after Kanye Clary’s season-ending injury and he’s averaged 18.3 points, 3.3 assists and 2.3 rebounds per game. After having 60 assists to 42 turnovers as a freshman, Hubbard has 102 assists this season and has turned the ball over just 37 times on the year.
With five more makes, Hubbard will also get his 100th made three of the season. He made 108 a season ago when he broke the school record for a single season. Hubbard is also 123-for-139 and shooting an incredible 89% from the line.
The All-SEC Bulldogs will be back in action on Wednesday in Nashville at the SEC Tournament when they take on LSU in the first round at 6 p.m.
