For the second-straight season Josh Hubbard is the Howell Trophy Winner.

The sophomore guard from Mississippi State would beat out Ole Miss’ Sean Pedulla and Jackson State’s Daeshun Ruffin for the award and landed it for the second time in as many tries. Named after Bulldog legend Bailey Howell, the award is given annually to the best player in the state of Mississippi.

State has now won the award 12 times over the course of 21 years. Ole Miss is second with six winners.

“He’s a better person than he is a player,” head coach Chris Jans said at the ceremony. “That’s easy to say, but it’s the truth with Josh. He’s got an unbelievable support system. His demeanor never changes and that’s a great trait to have. I’m just impressed with his approach, the way that he goes about his business every day.”

Hubbard landed the honor in the middle of a fantastic sophomore year. After having a great debut season that saw Hubbard set the school record for single-season three-pointers with 108, Hubbard is expanding his game.

The Madison native is averaging 18.3 points per game this year with 3.3 assists, 2.3 rebounds and 0.9 steal per game. He’s the first player in State history to notch over 500 points and 100 assists in a season, and he’s five made three-pointers shy of 100 for the second year in a row.

Hubbard has already made 203 threes in his two years and is second in the league with 87% free throw makes during that time. He’s scored 1,164 career points and doesn’t show any signs of slowing down.

The Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame put on the event at Philadelphia’s Pearl River Resort and it was sponsored by the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indiana. The women’s side was represented by finalist Jerkaila Jordan for the Gillom Trophy and that award was presented to Ole Miss’ Madison Scott.

Bulldog legend and current women’s assistant coach Victoria Vivians was the featured speaker of the event and fielded a question and answer session by Hall of Fame Sportswriter Rick Cleveland.

The men’s team is preparing for a run to the NCAA Tournament as they head to Nashville for the SEC Tournament as the No. 10 seed. State plays LSU on Wednesday night at 6 p.m. The women’s team will await their NCAA Tournament fate on Sunday night.
