REPORT: Mississippi State set to hire Alabama's Coleman Hutzler as defensive coordinator
Per Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports, Mississippi State head coach Jeff Lebby is close to finalizing his defensive coordinator hire. Dellenger reported Wednesday morning that Alabama linebackers coach/special teams coordinator Coleman Hutzler is finalizing an agreement to become the Bulldogs’ new defensive coordinator.
Hutzler spent the past two seasons coaching outside linebackers and special teams at Alabama. Over the past two years Hutzler has coached Alabama All-American linebackers Will Anderson and Dallas Turner along with all-league performer Chris Braswell.
Before joining Nick Saban’s staff in Tuscaloosa, Hutzler served as the special teams coordinator at Ole Miss for the 2021 season. He also spent one season at Texas as the Longhorns’ co-defensive coordinator.
Prior to his move to Texas, Hutzler spent four seasons at South Carolina (2016-19) as the Gamecocks’ special teams coordinator and was nominated for the 2017 Broyles Award, which is given to the top assistant in college football.
In 2015, Hutzler was the special teams coordinator and outside linebackers coach at Boston College. The Las Vegas native also coached two different stints at Florida, coaching the Gators’ special teams from 2010-11 and then coached special teams and outside linebackers in the 2014 season.

Hutzler also served as the outside linebackers coach and special teams coordinator at New Mexico in 2012-13 before beginning his coaching career at the University of San Diego.
With the expected hire of Hutzler, Lebby is still in search of a safeties coach and cornerbacks coach to round out his first coaching staff in Starkville.
