Mississippi State’s non-conference slate

Mississippi State fans have known for a while who the Bulldogs are set to face off against in 2024. However, they can now start planning ahead as the full 2024 football schedule has been released.

First on the chopping block for Mississippi State is the Eastern Kentucky Colonels, who finished this past season 5-6 overall and 4-2 in conference play. The Colonels’ football team, despite being members of the ASUN officially, play in the United Athletic Conference at the FCS level. That game is set to open Mississippi State’s season on August 31.

Following the opener to the Colonels, Mississippi State will travel to Tempe, Arizona, to face off against the Arizona State Sun Devils (3-9, 2-7) on September 7 before returning home to play the Toledo Rockets (11-2, 8-0) on September 14. The Rockets went undefeated in MAC play and should be a formidable G5 test for first year head coach Jeff Lebby’s new-look Bulldog squad.

On Nov. 2, this writer will be getting a birthday present in the form of a Mississippi State football game against UMass. Whether it will be a good present or not is to be determined, but that midseason tune up game will be a good break in conference play for Mississippi State. The Minutemen finished a dismal 3-9 last season, and should be an underdog when they roll into Starkville.

SEC schedule

The Bulldogs will kick off their SEC slate in week four against the Florida Gators on September 21. The Gators finished this past season 5-7, and if it weren’t for his recruiting efforts, head coach Billy Napier might be jobless. It feels like a make or break year for Napier at Florida, and the Gators will indubitably be looking to make a statement in Starkville.

Week five will see State welcome Texas to the SEC on the road in Austin. The September 28 contest will be the fifth meeting all-time between the programs, and Mississippi State will be looking to inch ahead in the series that currently sits knotted up at 2-2.

Following an open date during week six, the Bulldogs will travel to Athens, Georgia, to take on the Bulldogs from the other side of the conference on October 12. Talk about a tough couple weeks, huh? Bad news, it doesn’t get much easier.

On October 19, MSU will welcome Mike Elko and the new-look Texas A&M Aggies squad to Davis-Wade Stadium before hosting Arkansas the following weekend on October 26. The Hogs are in desperate need of a rebuild, so Lebby and company could very well capitalize in one or both of these two games.

After the November 2 game against UMass, State will hit the road once again to take on the Tennessee Volunteers in Knoxville on November 9 before another bye week. On the back side of the bye, Mississippi State will play host to the Missouri Tigers, who are looking to carry their momentum from 2023 into next season.

And finally, as always, Mississippi State will wrap up its regular season against Ole Miss on November 30 in Oxford for a chance to take back the Golden Egg.
