100 Day Bulldog Countdown: 72 Days - No. 72, OL Canon Boone
Jeff Lebby’s era of Mississippi State football has arrived.
The Bulldogs are on their third coach in as many years as Mike Leach’s tragic passing opened the door for defensive coordinator Zach Arnett’s debut as head coach last year. That experiment failed before the year even ended for State and now it’s Lebby’s turn to take the wheel.
While there is always a risk in hiring first time head coaches, Lebby brings to Starkville an exciting offensive scheme that has been productive everywhere he’s been. The coach has also brought with him some swagger that has the fanbase ready to see what’s next.
Over the course of the next 100 days, we will take a look at Lebby’s roster and even some fun historical rewinds that will bring back memories for Dawg fans of all ages.
Today, we look at a offensive lineman competing for more playing time this year.
100 Day Bulldog Countdown: 73 Days – No. 72, Jr. OL Canon Boone
The Bulldogs had to win a big recruiting battle back in 2020 when Leach was able to pull Boone out of the state of Texas.
State started recruiting Boone in the late spring after his junior season but he would pick Virginia Tech over the Bulldogs just before his senior season. Mason Miller and Leach didn’t stop recruiting Boone hard, however. By the middle of the season, State was considered a major threat to flip the talented blocker from the Lone Star state.

On signing day, Boone would officially flip to the Bulldogs. Boone was the state of Texas’ No. 135 player according to composite rankings and the No. 83 offensive tackle in the country.
The 6’4, 315-pounder from Dickinson High School in Kemah, Texas, Boone has waited his turn in Starkville as he continues to develop. He played just one game in his first two seasons in Starkville, but last season he got a chance to get more playing time.
Boone played in eight of the 12 games a season ago with 45 snaps. Boone is competing on the interior with the ability to play either guard or center. He will still have some more experienced players ahead of him this year, but Boone will have his chance to crack into the rotation this fall.
