100 Day Bulldog Countdown: 80 Days - No. 80, So. K Kyle Ferrie
Jeff Lebby’s era of Mississippi State football has arrived.
The Bulldogs are on their third coach in as many years as Mike Leach’s tragic passing opened the door for defensive coordinator Zach Arnett’s debut as head coach last year. That experiment failed before the year even ended for State and now it’s Lebby’s turn to take the wheel.
While there is always a risk in hiring first time head coaches, Lebby brings to Starkville an exciting offensive scheme that has been productive everywhere he’s been. The coach has also brought with him some swagger that has the fanbase ready to see what’s next.
Over the course of the next 100 days, we will take a look at Lebby’s roster and even some fun historical rewinds that will bring back memories for Dawg fans of all ages.
Today, we look at the Bulldog kicker entering year two.
100 Day Bulldog Countdown: 80 Days – No. 80, So. K Kyle Ferrie
When Nick Barr-Mira went down with an injury in camp last year, the Bulldogs had a freshman ready for his moment in Ferrie.
In game one, Ferrie made a statement. The Arkansas native hit all six of his extra points and also made both of his field goal attempts with a long make of 49 yards. It led to the first of two SEC Freshman of the Week honors for Ferrie as he did it again late in the year with a 4-for-4 day against Southern Miss.

Ferrie ended his first season with a 16-for-22 freshman season hitting that long of 49. He added a perfect 27-of-27 season on extra points and put himself in the pole position to keep his place kicking duties this season.
It wasn’t a surprise to Ferrie or the coach that recruited him in former special teams coordinator Eric Mele. Ferrie was impressive at Harding Academy in Arkansas. He won three-straight Class 3A state championships and was the all-time record holder in field goals (37), longest punt (72 yards) and points scored (313). Additionally, Ferrie is in the record book with three of the top 10 longest field goals in state history.
Ferrie enters fall camp competition fighting with Barr-Mira for place kicking duties but the Bulldogs will have options with the two. Barr-Mira is also a capable punter and, perhaps, State’s best kickoff specialist while Ferrie has earned the frontrunner’s spot for placekicker.
